Today was the Day! The Caldecott Awards!

As students arrived this morning the American Library Association Youth Media Awards was streaming live on our Smartboard.  Students didn’t even take off their coats!  They quickly sat on the carpet and began watching.  We saw the end of the Sibert Awards for informational books, the Dr. Seuss awards for early readers and then the CALDECOTT!  Below you can watch a video of us as we watched the announcements.  Please click here to see a list of all the awards given out today.  There is one book we haven’t read yet, and that is Mr. Wuffles.  So quickly go to the library or bookstore to get a copy.

CALDECOTT HONORS: Journey, Flora and the Flamingo, Mr. Wuffles

CALDECOTT MEDAL: Locomotive

A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin won a Schneider Family award and a Sibert Honor.  Today we read the book that won the Sibert Medal for informational books, Parrots Over Puerto Rico.  I just happened to have checked it out of the library!

Locomotive also won a Sibert Honor

A favorite in our class, Penny and Her Marble by Kevin Henkes won a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor award!

Nino Wrestles the World won a Pura Belpre Award honoring a Latino illustrator

I love that the kids were so excited to hear the winners. Carson couldn’t wait to get to school to find out. He talked about it all morning.
